Uma profile
El Condor Pasa—or simply El—arrives like a burst of trumpet fanfare. The “Phantom Bird” of the Junior Division, she is a masked, luchadora-styled Uma Musume from Miho Dorm with the kind of presence that refuses to fade into the background. She calls herself Atashi, El, or even Elel, addresses her mentor as Trainer-san, and carries herself with the fearless certainty of someone who has already decided she is the world’s strongest. With El, subtlety was never really in the running.
That larger-than-life attitude is not just for show. El is vividly, proudly herself: vivacious, quirky, confident, and at times a little reckless. She loves pro wrestling, dislikes being quiet, and the combination explains a lot. Everything about her points toward motion, noise, color, and flair. Even her design leans into that spirit, with a luchador-inspired style and a waist belt said to echo the real horse’s blue belly band with red lines. Her name, drawn from the famous Peruvian musical work El Cóndor Pasa, only adds to the sense that she was made to enter with drama.
Her mask is the center of that image, but also something more personal: it was a gift from her father, and she keeps it on at all times. That single detail gives her flamboyant presentation a surprising gravity. El’s world is full of similarly memorable little touches. She grew up with a hawk named Mambo, whom she treated like family. She always checks the lyrics before karaoke. She even uses a special fabric softener just for her mask. For all her thunderous confidence, these habits make her feel precise, affectionate, and oddly endearing.
In the everyday details, El remains as distinctive as ever. She is 163 cm tall, with measurements 89-58-86, 24 cm shoes, and a listed weight note of “Slight increase (the weightlifting’s working!)”—which feels perfectly in character for someone so energetic and physically expressive. Her roommate is Grass Wonder, who is also counted among her notable rivals and close associations, alongside Special Week. King Halo, Seiun Sky, and Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi are also listed among the Uma Musume connected to her profile. Voiced by Minami Takahashi, El comes with the kind of spirited core that makes even a still image feel halfway to a grand entrance.

El Condor Pasa was one of the standout Japanese racehorses of the late 1990s, a dark bay stallion foaled on 17 March 1995. Bred and owned by Takashi Watanabe and trained at Miho by Yoshitaka Ninomiya, he raced in an era when elite Japanese runners were increasingly measured on an international stage. His record and reputation place him firmly among the notable middle-distance horses of his generation.
His pedigree combined major international influences. El Condor Pasa was by Kingmambo out of Saddlers Gal, a daughter of Sadler's Wells, giving him a background that blended speed, class, and depth of stamina. He came from a family that also included Memories of You, Nice Wenger, and Sistine Chapel. That bloodline, together with his Japanese connections, helped shape a horse who would become a flagship performer for his owner-breeder.
The defining domestic highlight of his career was his victory in the 1998 Japan Cup (G1), the signature win listed on his record and the achievement most closely associated with his name. Across his racing career he earned ¥376.08 million in JRA prize money, a figure that reflects both consistency and top-level success. His profile as a G1 winner and internationally campaigned horse made him one of the central Japanese racing figures of his time.
Recognition followed at the highest level. El Condor Pasa was named JRA Horse of the Year for 1999 and also received the title of JRA Best Older Male Horse, confirming the esteem in which his performances were held. In 2014, he was inducted into the JRA Hall of Fame, a lasting institutional tribute that secured his place in Japanese racing history.
By the time he retired, El Condor Pasa had become more than just a top-class winner: he was a symbol of late-1990s Japanese ambition and excellence. With a major Japan Cup triumph, championship honors, and Hall of Fame recognition, his legacy endures as that of a horse who carried distinguished bloodlines and fulfilled them on the racecourse.
