Note: Fujimasa March's real-life inspiration has not been officially confirmed by Cygames. The information below reflects the commonly accepted identification used by the Umamusume community.
Fujimasa March is widely believed to be based on the regional racehorse March Tosho (マーチトウショウ), an early rival of Oguri Cap during their time racing at Kasamatsu Racecourse in 1987.
While March Tosho never achieved the national fame of horses such as Tokai Teio, Special Week, or Oguri Cap, he occupies a unique place in Japanese racing history due to his rivalry with the future superstar. During Oguri Cap's local racing career, the two horses met multiple times, with March Tosho handing Oguri some of his earliest defeats before Oguri began his rise to national prominence.
This rivalry forms the foundation of Fujimasa March's role in Umamusume: Cinderella Gray, where she is portrayed as Oguri Cap's first major rival at Kasamatsu Tracen Academy. Like her presumed real-life counterpart, Fujimasa March is depicted as a respected local champion whose presence helps establish Oguri Cap's strength and potential.
Unlike many Umamusume characters based on famous JRA champions, information about March Tosho is scarce. Much of his racing career took place within regional NAR racing, and detailed historical records from local Japanese racecourses during the 1980s are often incomplete or difficult to access online. As a result, relatively little verified information survives compared to the extensive records available for Japan's major Grade 1 winners.
Although no official source has publicly confirmed March Tosho as Fujimasa March's inspiration, the connection is widely accepted within the Umamusume community due to the close parallels between the character's story and the documented rivalry between March Tosho and Oguri Cap.
