Uma profile
Eclipse is a British Umamusume inspired by the legendary Thoroughbred Eclipse, one of the most influential racehorses in history.
Graceful, intelligent and dignified, Eclipse carries herself with the confidence of someone who knows her legacy shaped generations to come. While she rarely raises her voice, her presence alone commands attention, and many younger Umas look to her as a symbol of excellence.
A lover of fine tea, classical literature and quiet gardens, Eclipse prefers strategy and composure over reckless competition. However, once she steps onto the track, her aristocratic calm gives way to a fierce determination that reminds everyone why her name has endured for centuries.
Though often viewed as distant due to her noble bearing, Eclipse deeply values tradition, mentorship and the preservation of racing history. She believes every Uma has the potential to leave a legacy of her own.
"History is not something we inherit. It is something we create."

Few horses have left a mark on racing history as profound as Eclipse. More than two centuries after his death, his name remains synonymous with excellence, dominance and legacy.
Foaled on 1 April 1764 during a solar eclipse, the chestnut colt would grow into one of the greatest racehorses ever seen. His birth alone seemed destined for legend, and his career only reinforced that reputation.
At a time when horse racing was rapidly growing in popularity across Britain, Eclipse proved to be unlike anything spectators had witnessed before. Possessing extraordinary speed, stamina and physical power, he overwhelmed his opponents with such ease that betting markets often struggled to find anyone willing to wager against him.
The phrase most closely associated with Eclipse comes from one of his races:
"Eclipse first, the rest nowhere."
The expression was reportedly used when Eclipse's lead was so overwhelming that the other horses were considered effectively out of contention. Over time the phrase became inseparable from his legend and remains one of the most famous quotations in racing history.
Between 1769 and 1770, Eclipse won all eighteen of his recorded races without suffering a single defeat. Many victories were achieved by enormous margins, often with his jockey under little pressure to push him to his limits. Contemporary reports frequently described him as being vastly superior to the competition of his era.
However, Eclipse's greatest contribution to racing would come after his retirement.
Standing at stud, Eclipse became one of the most influential stallions in history. His offspring inherited his speed and athleticism, and his bloodline spread rapidly throughout Britain and beyond. Generation after generation of successful racehorses traced their ancestry back to him.
Today, the overwhelming majority of modern Thoroughbred racehorses descend from Eclipse through the male line. His influence can be found in the pedigrees of countless champions across the world, including horses that raced centuries after his own career ended.
This extraordinary impact transformed Eclipse from a champion racehorse into something even greater: a foundation sire whose genetic legacy helped shape the modern Thoroughbred breed itself.
Unlike many great horses whose achievements fade with time, Eclipse's importance has only grown. While records and race results may eventually be surpassed, the influence he exerted on horse racing continues to this day.
For this reason, Eclipse is remembered not simply as an undefeated champion, but as one of the most important horses ever to stand on a racecourse.
More than 250 years after his birth, his name still commands respect throughout the racing world.
Eclipse was not merely first.
He became the standard by which greatness would be measured.
Eclipse made his public debut at Epsom as a five-year-old.
His superiority was so obvious that owner Dennis O'Kelly famously declared:
Eclipse first, the rest nowhere.
The phrase would become one of the most famous quotations in horse racing history and remains associated with Eclipse more than 250 years later.
The information presented in this profile has been compiled from historical racing records, pedigree references and modern racing historians.
Eclipse raced during the eighteenth century, before the introduction of modern race timing and standardised race recording. Some details may vary between historical sources, particularly race distances, margins and race conditions. Where discrepancies exist, the most widely accepted historical record has been used.
