Uma profile
Daiichi Ruby carries herself with the kind of poise that makes “Ojou” feel less like a nickname and more like an atmosphere. A Senior Division student from Ritto Dorm, she is small at 141 cm, but nothing about her presence feels slight. Between her refined bearing, her choice of the elegant self-pronoun Watakushi, and the calm formality of calling her trainer Anata, Ruby comes across as composed, polished, and just a little intimidating in the way truly self-possessed people often are.
That refinement shows up everywhere in the details. Ruby’s strong points are using fountain pens and playing chess, both wonderfully precise pursuits that suit her image perfectly. Even her quirks sound graceful: her ears perk up when she hears music, and the tip of her tail naturally curls into an elegant shape. Her room also hints at the values behind the polish—she keeps a family photo with her mother and grandmother on display, a small but telling touch that gives her aristocratic aura a warmer center.
She is not presented as flawless, though, and that makes her sharper as a character. Sunshowers are listed among her weak points, along with clothes that do not fit—an almost charmingly exact complaint for someone so carefully put together. Her recorded weight note, “Splendid progress,” keeps things teasingly dignified as well. And then there are the little extravagant rumors that follow her: the family dog, Saffy-chan, is apparently extremely cute, and the ribbon in her hair ornament reportedly costs enough to buy a full school uniform set. With Ruby, even the side notes feel luxurious.
Her relationship circle adds a bit of drama to that elegant image. K.S. Miracle is her roommate in Ritto Dorm, and the two are noted to get along well thanks to similar priorities. Daitaku Helios, meanwhile, is described as both rival and admirer, with their personalities strongly clashing—a combination that gives Ruby’s story a lively edge. Yamanin Zephyr is also counted among her rivals, and Ruby’s place alongside Helios, K.S. Miracle, and Zephyr as one of the protagonists of Umamusume Pretty Derby: Sprinters' Story underlines her importance in that fast, competitive corner of the cast.

Daiichi Ruby was a dark bay Japanese mare of the late 1980s and early 1990s, foaled on 15 April 1987 and bred by Ogifushi Bokujo. She raced in the colors of H. Tsujimoto and was trained by Yuji Ito at Ritto, building a reputation as a high-class sprinter-miler. By the end of her career she had earned more than ¥430 million, a substantial total that reflects how consistently she competed at the top level.
Her pedigree tied her to an already accomplished female line. Daiichi Ruby was by Tosho Boy and out of Hagino Top Lady, with Sancy listed as her damsire. That background combined proven speed and class, and she carried it onto the track in a way that made her one of Japan’s standout mares of her generation. The family also included siblings such as Dream Dream, Dream Boy, and Umeno Ascot, underlining that she came from an active producing line.
On the racecourse, Daiichi Ruby compiled a record of 18 starts for 6 wins, 6 seconds, and 1 third. Her best work came over sprint to mile distances, and her major victories included the 1991 Yasuda Kinen, the 1991 Sprinters Stakes, and the 1991 Keio Hai Spring Cup. Those wins placed her among the elite performers in open company rather than limiting her reputation to mares-only competition.
That 1991 campaign, in particular, secured her place in Japanese racing history. She was recognized as the JRA Best Older Filly or Mare, and research sources also credit her as the season’s best sprinter or miler. Even where award listings vary slightly by year between sources, the broader picture is clear: Daiichi Ruby was celebrated not just as an excellent mare, but as one of the leading speed horses in Japan at her peak.
She was retired after her racing career and died on 26 April 2007. Daiichi Ruby remains notable as a mare who successfully bridged speed, class, and durability, with a top-level résumé built in an era when major mixed-sex sprint and mile prizes were fiercely contested. Her name still stands out in the Japanese record books through both her Group-level successes and her championship recognition.
