Epiphaneia was a bay Japanese stallion of the 2010s, foaled on 11 February 2010 and bred by Northern Farm. He raced in the colours of U.Carrot Farm and was trained from Ritto by Katsuhiko Sumii. A middle-distance performer, he retired with JRA earnings of ¥687.80 million, his record highlighted by victory in the 2014 Japan Cup (G1), the signature success named in the available evidence.
His pedigree made him notable even before his racing career fully unfolded. Epiphaneia was by Symboli Kris S out of Cesario, a daughter of Special Week, giving him a cross of major Japanese bloodlines. He also came from an exceptionally productive family: among his siblings were Saturnalia, winner of the 2019 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) (G1), and Leontes, winner of the 2015 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1). That depth of immediate family has helped keep Epiphaneia prominent in discussions of elite Northern Farm breeding.
On the track, Epiphaneia developed into a top-class G1 horse, and the Japan Cup stands as the defining achievement of his career. Winning that race placed him among the standout middle-distance runners of his generation in Japan, and it remains the accomplishment most closely associated with his name in the surviving source record. His substantial earnings further reflect a career spent competing at a high level.
After racing, Epiphaneia retired to stallion duties, extending his importance from the racecourse to the breeding shed. His ownership structure also reflected modern Japanese bloodstock practice: he was syndicated by U.Carrot Farm in 400 shares priced at ¥150,000 each. Combined with his own G1 success and his distinguished female family, that made him a natural prospect for stud.
Epiphaneia’s place in the modern Japanese stud book rests on a blend of race performance, pedigree strength, and family significance. As a Japan Cup winner by Symboli Kris S out of Cesario, and as a brother to other major winners, he represents the kind of racehorse whose reputation is tied not only to one great afternoon on the track but also to a broader dynasty of high-class performers.
